If everything that employers’ were seeking could be expressed through a resume, there would be no point in interviews. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a company that doesn’t hold interviews during their hiring process.  This means that there are desirable qualities that cannot be put on paper.  One must be prepared to display such qualities in person in order to lock in a job.

DRESSING THE PART

The very first impression you will make on an interview is that of how you appear, so like it or not, you must consider carefully how you get dressed that day.  When applying for jobs in the arena of Industrial Technology, interviews will most likely call for formal interview attire.  In other words, as cool as your deck shoes and Guy Harvey t-shirts might be, leave them at home.  This is not a time to express your personality through your clothing.  You merely want to look presentable.

Formal attire begins with a suit.  Choose a conservative color, and for women considering a skirt suit, make sure the skirt reaches the knee.  Absolutely avoid sneakers and open-toed shoes.  Hair should be clean and neatly out of your face.  And finally, as far as jewelry, make-up, and perfume/cologne are concerned, DON’T overdue it.

If you have not already noticed, most of these suggestions are simple enough for a college graduate to do without being told.  Remember, you are an educated individual who has already worked hard to get to where you are.  Be confident in what you have achieved and be excited to take this next step.  This attitude will always be appreciated and leave a positive impression in an interview setting.
