Job Search

Searching for a job can be a frustrating task. It is important that students do not wait until their senior year to begin searching for a job. A student's junior year is the optimal time to begin searching for post graduation employment. Students that are interested in applying for an internship need to start looking even sooner. Internships need to start being researched during a student's sophomore year.
Students with proper job searching techniques will have an advantage over students who do not have these skills. There are many tools that can help make the job search less chaotic and provide students with a sense of direction. These tools consist of the following: career centers,
job fairs, job search engines, and company websites. A student who uses each of these tools to its full potential will increase his or her chance of being employed shortly after graduation. They may even be one of the few who have a job waiting for them as soon as they step off of the stage with their diploma in hand.

Career Centers

ULL Career Services Center

   Louisiana Workforce Commission

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s career center is an excellent place for a student to start a job search. The career center offers a multitude of job searching tools to current students and ULL alumni. It is conveniently located on campus on the first floor of the Conference Center.
The job searching tools that the career center offers include: career planning, online resume posting, career counseling, a job searching engine, and on-campus interviews. The variety of resources that ULL Career Services provides makes it a great starting point for a job search.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) is another great place to start looking for a job. It is a state funded career center that provides many of the same services that the ULL Career Services Center offers with the addition of computers that the public may use for job searching purposes. The local LWC career center is located at 706 East Vermillion St. Lafayette, LA 70501.
The services at the LWC career center are free to the public. Anyone may use the LWC online resources as long as the user has internet access. The LWC offers free use of their computer center for individuals that do not have the luxury of internet access. In order for a person to have access to the LWC computers and LWC counseling a person must go through a simple registration process in person at the LWC office. All that is needed to register is a valid picture ID.

Job Fairs
The job fair is the greatest job searching tool discussed in this website. Job fairs offer an opportunity that other job searching tools do not, person-to-person interaction with actual representatives of a company. The ability to have face-to-face interaction with an actual company representative is the greatest advantage that a job fair has over both types of websites and the career centers.
While students can gain information and employment requirements from websites and career centers, job fairs give students an opportunity to get real time answers to any questions they may have. Job fairs also provide a great opportunity to find an internship. Internships provide students with the job experience that employers are looking for. Students that are interested in applying for a summer internship must start applying with companies during the fall semester prior to the targeted summer session. Most companies that provide internships to Industrial Technology majors start selecting their summer intern applicants during November and December of the prior year.

Company Websites Job Search Engines
Almost all large companies and many small companies have their own websites. A company website is a good place to get general information on employment. The problem with most company websites is lack of specific information that an applicant may want to know.
Most company websites have a webpage that describes the company’s general requirements for employment. These sites will usually have a link that leads to an email address where an applicant can send his or her cover letter and resume. The company web site is also a great place to research information about the company’s background. This information is beneficial if an applicant is selected for an interview.
The companies listed below are employers that are known to hire students with an Industrial Technology degree. Don't worry these companies are not the only ones that hire Industrial Technology majors. This list just contains some of the more popular companies that employ Industrial Technology majors. We would need to dedicate an entire website to be able to list every company that hires students in this field of study. This list's purpose is to give students a starting point. For the students' convenience, these links will send you directly to the company’s career page. The career links on some of these companies’ home pages are a little hard to find.
Job search engines are invaluable job searching tools. Students can gather information on local and nationwide job openings. Information gathering is about all that a student can do on these websites without registering with the site. To take full advantage of the services that these engines have to offer, a student must register with the website.
Registration is worth the five minutes that it takes to complete. This process usually includes a minimum of giving your name an email address and a telephone number. Once a student is registered, these sites will usually start a personal profile by asking for education level, career interests, work experience, and current employment status. With this information these engines will customize a list of job openings that match the information that the student gives.
Another service that job search engines offer to a registered student is the option of posting their resume on the site. This allows potential employers to view a student’s resume. It also allows a student to apply for a posted job opening by simply pushing a button.
The services covered in the previous paragraphs are common among the job searching engines listed below.  Some of these engines provide additional information such as resume tips, interview tips, career planning, and job hunting strategies
